Abstract Intent

The discovery of my own abstract language was the most liberating experience of my lifetime... it was where I wanted to be. Whilst in my final year at art school I was finally able to commit to the vision that I had been striving to find and which has been my pre-occupation ever since. Distilling the multiplicity of visual stimulus that was overcrowding my thoughts and visual expression to a simple set of marks and colours liberated my work in this important period. This simplification freed my painting and drawing from representational work which was no longer allowing me to develop. It was probably the most significant step I have ever taken in my artistic development and represents the esteem in which I hold art school even to today for creating the climate in which this could happen.
